Launching Romanian Studies at NUML Islamabad
Dan Stoenescu participated in the inauguration of the first Romanian Studies program at the National University of Modern Languages in Islamabad, a new initiative launched by the Embassy of Romania in Pakistan together with the Institute of the Romanian Language in partnership with NUML. The program marks the introduction of Romanian language, literature and culture into one of Pakistan’s leading multilingual universities and establishes a formal academic presence for Romanian Studies in the country.
The curriculum is designed to combine language instruction with literature, history, translation and cultural studies, offering students an integrated approach to Romanian Studies. Coordinated by Dr. Oana Ursache, the programme aims to create pathways for academic cooperation, student exchange and collaborative research between Pakistani institutions and Romanian counterparts.
At the inauguration the Embassy of Romania donated a collection of books on Romanian culture and history, provided with support from the Romanian Cultural Institute and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. This library resource will support classroom learning and research, and help build local capacity in translation and regional studies linked to Central and Eastern Europe.
For Pakistani students, scholars and language professionals, the Romanian Studies program opens new academic and cultural bridges between South Asia and Romania. By integrating practical language skills with cultural and historical context, the initiative is positioned to deepen long-term ties, encourage scholarly exchange and expand opportunities for collaboration between NUML and Romanian academic institutions.
