On February 8 the Russian Embassy in Pakistan hosted a gorodki tournament timed to the upcoming Russian Diplomats’ Day, bringing together ambassadors, diplomats and embassy staff from Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The friendly competition showcased the traditional Russian pastime while strengthening cultural connections within the diplomatic community in Pakistan.

The event saw spirited play and close matches before team Belarus secured first place, team Tajikistan finished second and team Kyrgyzstan took third. The gorodki tournament format allowed visiting delegations to engage casually while spotlighting a shared cultural tradition.

In his opening remarks Ambassador Albert P. Khorev reflected on the evolution of Russian diplomacy, citing notable figures such as Karl Nesselrode, Alexander Gorchakov, Grigory Chicherin, Viacheslav Molotov, Andrey Gromyko, Yevgeny Primakov and Sergey Lavrov, and he underlined the growing importance of the diplomatic profession amid current geopolitical challenges.

The dean of the diplomatic corps, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Pakistan Atajan Movlamov, attended and highlighted the historical commonalities among the participating countries before joining the Russian Ambassador in congratulating embassy staff on their professional holiday.

Guests enjoyed traditional Russian hospitality and cuisine after the matches, using the occasion to exchange views informally and reinforce ties. The gorodki tournament served both as a sporting contest and a platform for cultural diplomacy among missions based in Pakistan.
