Supporting Climate Resilient Homes in Balochistan
The United Nations Development Programme, supported by the Government of Germany through KfW and in partnership with the Government of Balochistan, has handed over 118 climate resilient homes to flood-affected families in Hanna-Urak, Quetta District.
These houses provide safer shelter for families whose homes were destroyed during the devastating 2022 floods and help communities rebuild while strengthening resilience to future climate shocks. The new units are designed to reduce vulnerability to both flooding and rising temperatures by integrating climate-resilient features into everyday living.
Senior provincial officials and local representatives attended the handover, including Mr. Zeeshan Javed, Secretary of the Planning and Development Department; Ms. Batool Asadi, Chief of Foreign Aid at Pⅅ Mr. Naveed Ahmed Sheikh, Director Planning & Coordination at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority; and Mr. Mir Murad Baloch, Honorary Consul of Germany in Balochistan, alongside local authorities and community leaders.
The housing drive is part of the Flood Reconstruction and Coordination Programme through which UNDP is supporting construction of 700 climate and disaster resilient houses in Balochistan. With the latest handover, 158 houses have now been completed and transferred to families, and the remaining units are expected to be finished over the coming months as the project progresses on schedule.
The dwellings incorporate practical resilience features such as raised plinths to reduce flood risk, reinforced structural elements to improve seismic safety, and improved ventilation to adapt to rising temperatures. These measures are intended to make the new homes safer and more comfortable while lowering future repair and recovery needs.
Dr. Samuel Rizk, Resident Representative of UNDP Pakistan, said the initiative underscores the importance of strong partnerships in helping communities recover from climate disasters. He emphasized that UNDP, together with the Government of Germany and the Government of Balochistan, is committed to helping flood-affected families rebuild safer homes and enhance long-term resilience.
Beyond individual housing reconstruction, the Programme is also supporting resilient community physical infrastructure that benefits thousands of people in Hanna-Urak, contributing to safer, stronger and more resilient communities across the district.
