Empowering Senior Citizens Across Islamabad
A ceremony in Islamabad on October 1, 2025, marked the International Day of Older Persons, where Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar addressed senior citizens, civil society representatives, community leaders and partner organisations to underscore government support for elder welfare.
The minister paid tribute to the lifelong contributions of senior citizens, calling them custodians of the nation’s heritage, wisdom and values. He reminded the audience that respect for elders is rooted in Pakistan’s cultural traditions and Islamic teachings, quoting the Hadith: “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders.” The comment framed the event’s emphasis on dignity and social inclusion for older adults.
Senator Tarar stressed the Government of Pakistan’s commitment, under Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks for the welfare of senior citizens. He highlighted the ICT Senior Citizens Act, 2021, as a basis for action and pointed to concrete measures already in progress, including the establishment of the Senior Citizens Fund and the development of Darul Shafqat, an old-age home in the capital.
While noting the importance of legislation, the minister urged that lasting change depends on societal commitment where senior citizens are cherished and fully included in community life. He emphasised the central role of families in providing quality time, love and attention, calling family care the strongest safeguard of dignity and well-being in old age.
Tarar also drew attention to the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, saying older persons are particularly at risk during extreme weather events and natural disasters. He called for policies and community initiatives that address the specific challenges older adults face in a changing climate, ensuring protection and access to support when crises strike.
The minister expressed appreciation for civil society, volunteers and community workers, acknowledging their tireless efforts as the backbone of a compassionate and inclusive society for senior citizens. He urged continued collaboration between government, families and organisations to translate policy into meaningful improvements in the lives of older Pakistanis.
