Advancing Laws on Smuggling of Migrants
Syed Kausar Abbas represented Pakistan as a panelist at the UN Constructive Dialogue on Smuggling of Migrants organized by UNODC on October 13, 2025 at the Vienna International Centre in Austria.
The session on legislative approaches and challenges related to smuggling of migrants brought together global experts, government representatives and civil society leaders to exchange practical experiences and identify gaps in existing laws and enforcement mechanisms.
During the dialogue Mr Abbas highlighted the need for legislative reform, cross-border cooperation and victim-centred protection measures to better prevent smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons. Emphasis was placed on harmonising national laws with international standards and improving coordination among states and agencies.
His participation underlined Pakistan’s commitment to tackling irregular migration and protecting vulnerable people who cross borders. Insights shared at the event aim to inform stronger legal frameworks and operational cooperation that will benefit Pakistani citizens and others affected by smuggling networks.
Mr Abbas expressed gratitude to UNODC for the opportunity to contribute to global collaboration and practical protection mechanisms, and reiterated the importance of sustained dialogue and joint action to safeguard lives and dignity across borders.
