SCO UN Cooperation Advances After Beijing Talks
On 14 November 2025, a meeting at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Beijing brought together Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the SCO, and Siddharth Chatterjee, the UN Resident Coordinator in China, along with heads and representatives of several specialized UN agencies operating in the country. The discussions focused on concrete measures to deepen SCO UN cooperation and improve coordination between regional and global institutions.
The SCO Secretary-General highlighted that ties with the United Nations have grown substantially in recent years, describing the partnership as an example of effective collaboration between a universal global body and a regional organisation. Participants exchanged views on expanding practical, results-oriented cooperation between the SCO, the UN and its specialized agencies, stressing the need for tangible outcomes on the ground.
Delegates paid special attention to outcomes from the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York and reviewed agreements reached after the SCO Secretary-General’s contacts with senior UN officials. The meeting underscored opportunities to translate those high-level understandings into joint programmes and coordinated action in areas such as development planning and technical assistance.
For Pakistan and other SCO members, strengthened SCO UN cooperation could present new avenues for aligning regional priorities with UN support mechanisms and improving cooperation with specialised agencies working in development, health and humanitarian response. The parties agreed to keep up regular exchanges of ideas and to continue close working cooperation aimed at delivering measurable results.
