Committee Advances Telecom Bill Discussions
The Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication met on 19 January 2026 at 12:00 noon in the Constitution Room of Parliament House, Islamabad, to examine the Pakistan Telecommunication Re-organization (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Chaired by Syed Amin ul Haq, the session focused on detailed deliberations of the proposed Telecom Bill and its implications for the sector.
Members engaged in thorough discussion of the Telecom Bill, analysing its various provisions and potential outcomes for regulators and service providers. A member of the Pakistan Peoples Party raised concerns that the party’s Parliamentary Legislative Committee had not been consulted on the draft. It was recommended that the draft be shared with Syed Naveed Qamar for review and, if amendments are proposed, the Bill should be returned to the Standing Committee for further consideration.
Present at the meeting alongside the Federal Minister were MNAs Ahmad Atteeq Anwar, Ammar Ahmad Khan Leghari, Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti, Gulnaz Shahzadi, Syed Ali Qasim Gillani, Dr. Mahesh Kumar Malani, Sadiq Ali Memon, Sharmila Sahiba Faruqi Hashaam, Ahmad Saleem Siddiqui and Pullain Baloch, as well as officials from the Ministry and its attached departments.
The committee’s direction emphasised stakeholder consultation and parliamentary engagement before finalising the Telecom Bill, signalling that further meetings or a revised draft may be brought back to the committee pending feedback from the suggested consultations.
