Senate Members Assure Journalists of Action in Tariq Virk Case; Rawalpindi Police Yet to Face Consequences

ISLAMABAD – A delegation from Pakistan Reporters Association (PRA) met with key members of the Senate’s Special Committee to raise concerns about the lack of action against Rawalpindi police officials involved in the Tariq Virk incident. The journalists’ delegation included senior media representatives who held separate meetings with Senators Irfan Siddiqui, Barrister Ali Zafar, and Sherry Rehman.

During the meetings, the Secretary of PRA briefed lawmakers on the developments surrounding the controversial case and emphasized that no action has yet been taken against the responsible officers of Rawalpindi Police, despite serious concerns over their conduct.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui urged the media not to walk out of Senate proceedings over the issue and assured the delegation that the matter would be taken to its logical conclusion. He confirmed that the case had already been referred to the Chairman of the Senate Committee for further action.

Barrister Ali Zafar added that a meeting of the Senate Information Committee would be convened as soon as the Chairman’s ruling is officially received from the House. He asserted that Rawalpindi police officials would be required to explain their actions in the committee and could not avoid accountability.

Backing the journalists’ stance, Senator Sherry Rehman expressed solidarity with the media and stated firmly that there would be no compromise on the issue.

The meetings reflect growing political and institutional support for the press, with lawmakers calling for transparency and accountability from law enforcement agencies in their dealings with journalists.
