Ethiopia Pursues Peaceful Sea Access Through Diplomacy

Ethiopia’s ambassador to Turkmenistan, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, met with Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov to discuss Ethiopia’s diplomatic efforts to secure sea access, emphasizing its importance for regional development and integration.

The meeting took place in Awaza, Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of the United Nations conference focusing on landlocked developing countries. During their discussions, both officials explored opportunities to enhance cooperation between Ethiopia and Turkmenistan in sectors including business, trade, investment, agriculture, aviation, technology, and culture.

Dr. Jemal highlighted Ethiopia’s peaceful and diplomatic initiatives to gain access to the sea, stressing that it is a critical need for the country’s population of over 130 million people. He explained that Ethiopia’s request aligns with both the aspirations of its citizens and international law.

According to the ambassador, facilitating Ethiopia’s access to the sea would boost economic growth in the region and foster greater regional integration by promoting peace and prosperity.

Foreign Minister Meredov recognized the significance of sea access for landlocked nations, pointing out its role in achieving equitable and sustainable development. He also commended Ethiopia’s economic progress and its pivotal role in advancing regional cooperation. Minister Meredov assured Ambassador Jemal of Turkmenistan’s commitment to deepening bilateral and multilateral ties with Ethiopia.
