Renowned Pakistani mountaineer, Naila Kayani, expressed her gratitude for the recognition from the Prime Minister and appealed for greater government support to bolster the mountaineering community in the country.
Speaking at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Islamabad, Kayani stressed the urgent need for a dedicated rescue team to ensure the safety of mountaineers facing challenges during their expeditions.
“It is a great privilege to have received a star distinction from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif,” she said.
Kayani highlighted the lack of government-level support for sports, particularly in mountaineering. She lamented the insufficient backing provided to nurture and groom climbers, despite an abundance of talent in Pakistan.
“If our mountaineers receive the support they deserve, they can undoubtedly make their mark on the global stage,” she asserted.
As a woman mountaineer, Kayani acknowledged the challenges she faced in a male-dominated field, emphasizing her journey to break barriers and demonstrate that women can achieve significant feats alongside men.
Kayani expressed her ambition to conquer the remaining six high peaks, underscoring the importance of government financial assistance for ambitious expeditions.
Kayani revealed that she did not receive any financial support at the government level, relying solely on private sponsors and the Alpine club for her remarkable achievements.
In addition to financial support, Kayani called for the establishment of a well-trained rescue team equipped with helicopters to respond promptly to emergencies during mountaineering expeditions.
