Advancing Urdu AI with Gramora Launch

A new AI-powered Urdu linguistic platform, Gramora, was inaugurated at the Allama Iqbal Open University central auditorium under the auspices of the Centre for Al-Sunnah and Translation to strengthen the digital presence of Pakistan’s national language. The project is billed as Pakistan’s first comprehensive Urdu AI system designed to support academic and professional communication.

Senator Pervez Rashid attended as the guest of honour, while Wajeeha Qamar, Minister of State for Federal Education and Vocational Training, former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Dr. Kamran Jahangir of the National Book Foundation, Dr. Aalia Sohail, Country Director of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies, and Dr. Aslam Baig, Secretary General of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, were present as distinguished guests. Speakers at the event described the platform as a milestone for the Urdu language.

Built to meet immediate national needs in local language technology, Gramora offers a suite of Urdu AI features including grammar correction, spell checking, rewriting and editing assistance, automated summarization, generation of synonyms and antonyms, and an integrated Urdu lexicon. These tools aim to make educational materials and professional correspondence more accurate and accessible in Urdu.

Organisers paid particular tribute to Dr. Ghulam Ali, director of the Centre for Al-Sunnah and Translation, whose leadership and long hours of work brought the project to fruition. Colleagues and participants praised his technical insight and the way he guided a multidisciplinary team to blend language scholarship with modern AI techniques.

At the close of the ceremony guests examined Gramora’s features and commended the team’s efforts. Dr. Ghulam Ali emphasised that the platform responds to an urgent need for indigenous linguistic technology and expressed hope that this national initiative will encourage further innovation in educational technology and language development across Pakistan.
