Shaping Pakistan through Architectural Identity

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal told the Institute of Architects Pakistan Convention and Exhibition 2026 in Islamabad that architecture is a lasting marker of a nation’s character, pointing to landmarks such as the Alhamra, the Badshahi Mosque and the Taj Mahal as enduring representations of civilizations.

Iqbal said that architectural identity must reach beyond individual buildings to shape lifestyles, public spaces and the distinct character of cities. He urged professionals to pursue human-centered, accessible and functional design that directly improves quality of life for residents across Pakistan.

Expressing concern over neglect of heritage, the minister highlighted how Karachi’s once-prominent yellow-stone façades are fading from the urban landscape and called for sensitive integration of modern trends with local culture to preserve and enrich the country’s architectural identity.

Iqbal also underscored the need for environmentally sustainable construction practices and reiterated the government’s commitment to expand low-cost housing through mortgage financing, linking sustainable building with affordable housing goals and broader social benefits.

To raise construction standards and foster innovation, he urged closer collaboration between architects and construction firms. During the event he visited exhibition stalls, met local designers and manufacturers, and assured continued government support to promote local products and boost exports.
