Parliamentary Journalism’s Role in Strengthening Democracy

Islamabad: On the occasion of World Parliamentarism Day, the Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) Pakistan reiterated its steadfast commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting constitutional journalism, and safeguarding press freedom within parliamentary settings. The association emphasized the essential role that independent journalism plays in fostering transparency, accountability, and public trust in governance.
In an official statement, PRA leaders, President Usman Khan and Secretary Naveed Akbar, highlighted that Parliament is more than just a legislative body; it symbolizes national unity and the confidence of the people. They underscored that parliamentary journalism acts as a vital link between citizens and their elected representatives, ensuring that public officials remain answerable for their actions. The leaders reiterated their dedication to facilitating responsible reporting and called for greater support from parliamentary authorities to create an environment conducive to free and factual reporting.
The PRA reaffirmed its belief that a healthy democracy depends on a free and effective press. President Usman Khan emphasized the need for journalists to have unfettered access to government information and public materials, asserting that transparency is pivotal for informed public discourse. The association also urged relevant stakeholders, including the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Chairman of the Senate, and the Parliamentary Secretariat, to address challenges faced by parliamentary reporters and to provide necessary facilities, protection, and respect for media personnel operating within parliamentary premises.
Secretary Naveed Akbar stressed that parliamentary journalism is central to fostering dialogue, enhancing accountability, and supporting transparent governance. He highlighted that the significance of this day lies in reaffirming the democratic principle that democracy is not merely about elections but about ongoing dialogue and responsible governance, in which independent journalism plays a crucial role.
Concluding its message, the PRA issued a firm warning to all forces seeking to undermine democratic structures. The association asserted that World Parliamentarism Day should serve as a reminder to uphold the principles of an accountable parliament, an informed public, and a free press—cornerstones of a resilient democracy. The PRA pledged to continue defending the constitution, democratic values, and journalistic integrity, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening democratic processes through responsible and independent parliamentary reporting.
