Environmental Protection Force Expansion and Smog Control Efforts

The Environmental Protection and Climate Change Department (EP&CCD) has announced significant measures to address pollution and curb smog in Punjab, including expanding the Environmental Protection Force (EPF) across ten heavily affected districts and deploying advanced fog cannons to improve air quality.
In a high-level meeting chaired by the Secretary EP&CCD, the expansion and enhancement of the Environmental Protection Force (EPF) was discussed extensively. The EPF will now actively operate within ten identified hotspot districts in Punjab where pollution levels are consistently high. Their activities are expected to target ten major contributing sectors, including industrial emissions, brick kilns, incinerators, fugitive dust, hospital waste, plastic waste, and wastewater management. These focused operations by the EPF are aimed at effectively controlling and mitigating various environmental pollutants at their source.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the deployment and operationalization of 15 fog cannons designed specifically to combat smog and fugitive dust. According to EP&CCD officials, these fog cannons will be placed strategically along key pollution hotspot routes. The objective of deploying this advanced technology is to reduce airborne dust particles and mitigate smog formation, ultimately resulting in substantially improved air quality.
Through these proactive initiatives—the expansion of the EPF’s operational reach and the deployment of sophisticated fog cannon technology—the EP&CCD aims to enhance environmental protection measures and safeguard public health in Punjab’s most vulnerable and polluted regions.
