Polio Eradication Efforts and Parental Responsibilities in Pakistan

Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal emphasized the continued threat of polio as environmental samples across Pakistan have confirmed the presence of the polio virus in various areas. He disclosed that 14 polio cases have been reported in the current year, stressing the need for greater responsibility among parents and communities to ensure children’s vaccination.

Speaking at a workshop held for polio prevention, Minister Kamal highlighted that despite widespread awareness of the deadly consequences of polio, it remains surprising that some parents show little concern regarding their children’s protection. He urged parents to fully recognize the gravity of the situation and proactively reach out to polio workers to keep their children safe through timely vaccination.

Minister Kamal noted that, unlike diseases such as cancer, which now have available treatments, polio remains incurable once contracted. Prevention through vaccination, therefore, remains the only viable defense against the debilitating disease.

He assured the public that the government remains fully committed and determined in striving toward polio eradication, ensuring continuous and dedicated efforts nationwide. Highlighting examples from other regions, the minister stated that even Afghanistan, under Taliban governance, conducts extensive house-to-house polio vaccination campaigns. Similarly, in conflict-ridden Gaza, Palestinian mothers ensure their children’s vaccination against polio, demonstrating a commendable commitment despite difficult conditions.

Minister Kamal appealed strongly to all communities to contribute actively to eradicating polio, underscoring that every child’s health and future depends critically on sustained vigilance and consistent immunization practices.
