Strengthening Pakistan Australia Relations Through Dialogue
Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani met the Australian High Commissioner at Parliament House in Islamabad on 22 September 2025 to discuss ways to deepen Pakistan Australia relations across multiple sectors.
The leaders emphasized enhancing cooperation in trade, education, defense and parliamentary engagement. They noted that diplomatic ties date back to 1948 and have expanded over time, and underlined the need to accelerate high-level exchanges and make parliamentary friendship groups more effective to strengthen people-to-people links.
Pakistan Australia relations were discussed in practical terms, with a focus on growing bilateral trade currently valued at around $2.5 billion and significant potential for expansion. Chairman Senate Gilani highlighted export opportunities in textiles, surgical instruments, IT services and food products while proposing a joint forum for chambers of commerce and private sector stakeholders to unlock new commercial avenues.
The meeting also covered cooperation in agriculture technology, renewable energy, mineral resources and information technology. On defense, both sides agreed there is wide scope for collaboration, including cybersecurity, maritime awareness and joint participation in peacekeeping missions.
Chairman Gilani commended the outgoing High Commissioner for his service and acknowledged Australia’s development assistance, underscoring appreciation for relief efforts. The two officials held a detailed exchange on the recent floods, noting Pakistan is among the countries most affected by climate change. They stressed the importance of international cooperation and a shared strategy for climate resilience, and recalled the Chairman’s visits to affected areas and meetings with flood victims.
Empowerment of women and inclusive development were highlighted as priority areas. The Chairman proposed annual joint parliamentary meetings and thematic working groups to sustain momentum and invited Australian parliamentary leadership to participate in the ISC conference launching in November, where Australian participation was described as particularly important.
Both sides pledged to consolidate historical ties, boost parliamentary and private sector exchanges, and work together for regional and global stability. The meeting reaffirmed that stronger Pakistan Australia relations will be advanced through targeted cooperation, increased delegations and sustained dialogue.
