Advancing Disability Rights in Pakistan through UNCRPD Consultation

The Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) hosted a provincial consultation in Quetta, focusing on Pakistan’s progress and challenges regarding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). The session brought together government officials and stakeholders to discuss the country’s initial report and develop a comprehensive, transparent response to the UN Committee’s list of issues.

Representatives from the Social Welfare Department of Balochistan highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting persons with disabilities. Notable efforts include the upcoming KUMAK Program 2025, ongoing reforms in special education, and the development of infrastructure to support adaptive sports and mental health services. These initiatives demonstrate the province’s commitment to improving the quality of life and inclusion of people with disabilities.

During the consultation, the MoHR presented key thematic areas derived from the UN Committee’s list of issues, encouraging open dialogue and feedback from participants. This collaborative approach is intended to create an inclusive state response that reflects the insights and needs of stakeholders from across the province.

The session concluded with a strong reaffirmation of Pakistan’s dedication to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities. Participants emphasized the importance of ongoing reforms, stakeholder engagement, and government accountability in fulfilling the commitments outlined in the UNCRPD.
