AJK Flood Assessment and Recovery Strategy Reviewed

A federal committee chaired by Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik reviewed recent flood damage in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and agreed to launch a comprehensive national survey and audit to produce accurate loss estimates. The committee endorsed a triangulated assessment process involving federal and AJK disaster authorities and called for technical experts to ensure repair costs reflect local conditions; it will meet again soon to finalize recommendations for the Prime Minister.
The meeting brought together senior officials, including the Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Moeen Wattoo, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, the Chief Secretary of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Khushhal Khan, and heads of relevant departments and agencies. Participants discussed initial ground assessments of flood damage and preliminary estimates for repair work.
Chairman NDMA told the committee that a nationwide, comprehensive survey and audit will be carried out to determine the full extent of losses and the associated costs. The purpose of the survey is to move beyond early, provisional figures and produce a validated, consolidated account of damage that can guide recovery funding and reconstruction planning.
Dr Musadik Malik proposed using a triangulated assessment method that would bring together the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA AJK), and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). He stressed that incorporating technical experts is essential to obtain precise, locally grounded cost estimates for infrastructure repairs.
Members agreed that a coordinated assessment strategy will strengthen decision-making, improve transparency, and help allocate resources more effectively. The committee said these steps will support an orderly and accountable recovery process for affected communities.
The Prime Minister’s committee will reconvene in the coming days to finalize its report and recommendations for submission to the Prime Minister, with the aim of ensuring timely action and the provision of necessary resources for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
