Investing in Biosciences to Secure Pakistan’s Food Future

Islamabad, 23 September 2025 — Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain addressed an international biosciences conference at Allama Iqbal Open University, underscoring the central role of biosciences in safeguarding food supplies, public health and environmental sustainability.

He warned that food security has become a pressing challenge for Pakistan as population growth, climate change and limited resources increase pressure on the system. “Biosciences are the backbone of sustainable development, directly linked to food availability, human health and ecological balance,” he said, urging immediate and sustained biosciences investment to close regional gaps and strengthen national capacity.

Referencing regional shifts, the minister noted that a time came when India faced shortages while Pakistan maintained surpluses, but today India has advanced ahead. He said this reality demands accelerated research and innovation to boost productivity and resilience.

He stressed that scientific research and modern technology must be applied across the agricultural sector to raise yields and ensure long-term system sustainability. “Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, but without technology, innovation and knowledge-led policies it cannot reach its full potential,” he added.

The minister praised Allama Iqbal Open University for aligning education and research with contemporary needs and commended the leadership of Professor Dr Nasser Mehmood for the university’s advances in research, innovation and social responsibility, citing fee waivers for flood-affected students as a notable example. He called for stronger cooperation among research institutes, universities, industry and policymakers and reiterated that sustained biosciences investment is essential to build a self-reliant, sustainable future for Pakistan.
