Pakistan Leads OIC Contact Group to Reopen Afghan Ties
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar addressed the first meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Afghanistan in Islamabad on 24 September 2025, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the brotherly country. The minister underscored that sustained engagement through the OIC Contact Group is essential to prevent Afghanistan’s isolation.
Senator Dar urged OIC members to prioritise unconditional humanitarian funding and to work urgently to revive trade and banking systems that link Afghanistan with regional partners. He stressed that restoring economic lifelines and enhancing regional connectivity are foundational steps the OIC Contact Group must champion to alleviate suffering and build confidence.
Expressing grave concern over terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil, the foreign minister warned that these networks threaten regional peace and security. He called on the Afghan authorities to take concrete and verifiable action against cross-border terrorism and asked the OIC Contact Group to hold all stakeholders accountable for preventing safe havens for extremists.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to contribute to a peaceful outcome, Senator Dar proposed a working group of OIC experts tasked with charting a practical roadmap for Afghanistan’s stability. He emphasised that lasting peace will require sincerity, mutual respect and the political will of Afghan authorities alongside steady regional support through the OIC Contact Group.
Pakistan urged coordinated OIC action to combine humanitarian relief, economic reintegration and counter-terror measures, signalling a diplomatic push to mobilise resources and technical expertise. The government called on members to translate commitments into timely, verifiable steps that advance security and development for the Afghan people and the wider region.
