Punjab Pursues Waste to Energy Technology
Mr. Zeeshan Rafique, Minister for Local Government & Community Development, led a high-level delegation from the Government of Punjab to Andritz Hydro GmbH in Germany to examine advanced waste to energy technologies and their applicability for Punjab.
The delegation included Dr. Naeem Rauf, Chairman Planning & Development Board Punjab, and participants received detailed briefings supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and GIZ. Discussions focused on potential collaborations to develop sustainable energy initiatives and promote clean, green solutions across urban and rural areas of the province.
Andritz Hydro presented cutting-edge systems for waste conversion, emission control and carbon credit optimization, highlighting technical pathways to convert municipal and industrial residues into usable power while minimizing atmospheric emissions. The briefings underlined how waste to energy platforms can integrate with existing waste management and power distribution frameworks in Punjab.
Delegates explored options to pilot projects that would test waste to energy facilities at scale, assess emission control measures and quantify carbon credit opportunities for provincial stakeholders. Emphasis was placed on tailoring solutions to local waste streams and regulatory settings to ensure sustainable outcomes and economic viability.
Officials said that adapting proven waste to energy technology could help Punjab reduce landfill burden, strengthen its renewable energy portfolio and create new revenue channels through carbon credit optimization, while supporting broader clean energy and environmental goals for the province.
