Advancing Mathematics and AI in Pakistan
On October 22, 2025 the Department of Mathematics organised a seminar on “Mathematics as the Foundation of Artificial Intelligence” with Dr Ayesha Rafiq, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Space Technology Islamabad, as guest speaker.
Dr Rafiq framed Mathematics and AI as the backbone of modern intelligent systems, tracing how core mathematical concepts inform model design and algorithmic reasoning. Her presentation explored applications in data analysis, predictive modeling and mathematical problem solving, showing how rigorous mathematical thinking improves performance and reliability in AI projects.
The talk connected theory with practice by highlighting examples relevant to local research and technology initiatives, encouraging Pakistani students and early career researchers to consider mathematics as a practical toolkit for innovation. Attendees were invited to examine foundational methods that underpin machine learning workflows and to engage with research opportunities linking mathematics and computing.
The session proved both inspiring and informative, with students leaving motivated to deepen their knowledge of Mathematics and AI and to contribute to STEM research through coursework and collaborative projects.
