How RTI Empowers Journalists and Promotes Transparency

**Right to Information Act Enhances Journalistic Credibility and Institutional Transparency, Says KP Chief Information Commissioner**

The Right to Information (RTI) Act has significantly strengthened the credibility of journalists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, allowing them greater access to authentic data and information from public entities, according to the province’s Chief Information Commissioner. The remarks were made during an interactive session with journalists and civil society members in Peshawar, organized by Individualland at a local hotel.

During the session, the Chief (care-taking) Information Commissioner of the KP Information Commission (KPIC) emphasized the positive impact the RTI Act has had on the media landscape. He highlighted that by utilizing the Act, journalists can obtain fact-based and verified information for investigative reporting. This access not only bolsters the validity of their reporting but also places pressure on public institutions to uphold merit and transparency.

Other officials from KPIC, including Commissioner (Legal) Arshad Ahmad and Deputy Director Communication Syed Saadat Jehan, also addressed participants’ questions. Arshad Ahmad noted that the RTI Act has played a crucial role in uncovering corruption within public affairs. He reaffirmed KPIC’s dedication to ensuring the full implementation of the Act, especially section-5, which requires public entities to proactively disclose maximum information via their official websites.

The session concluded with a commitment from KPIC officials to continue promoting transparency in government affairs, urging public entities to make more information readily accessible and encouraging journalists to use the RTI Act as a tool for accountability and good governance.
