Upgrading Khanki Headworks Strengthens Water Management
Completed in 2017, the new Khanki Headworks replaced an older structure that stood roughly 900 metres upstream and was subsequently demolished. The project, overseen by the Punjab Irrigation Department, provided a modernized intake that addresses long-standing needs in canal regulation and river interface.
The renovated Khanki Headworks is built to be more robust and to ensure smoother water flow and improved canal system management. By stabilizing the point where river water is diverted into the irrigation network, the upgrade helps maintain consistent distribution across downstream channels and supports operational control of the Chenab linked canals.
This development represents an important milestone in the evolution of agricultural infrastructure for the Chenab canal colonies, connecting the area’s historical legacy to contemporary water management needs. The Khanki Headworks upgrade strengthens local irrigation resilience and underlines ongoing efforts to modernize the region’s water delivery systems.
