Pakistan Ethiopia Discuss Green Initiatives and Climate Cooperation

**Pakistan and Ethiopia Explore Climate Cooperation and Green Initiatives**
Pakistan and Ethiopia have signaled a new chapter in environmental collaboration, with both countries expressing commitment to advancing green initiatives and climate resilience. This emerged as Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik met with H.E. Jemal Beker Abdulla, Ethiopia’s Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary, for bilateral talks in Islamabad.
During the meeting, Ambassador Jemal Beker Abdulla outlined Ethiopia’s flagship Green Legacy Initiative, emphasizing its mission to promote harmony with nature and empower women through sustainable practices. He emphasized the urgent need for global climate action, noting that countries like Pakistan, which contribute very little to global emissions, are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change. This, he stressed, necessitates timely adaptation and sustainability measures.
Discussions focused on possible avenues for collaboration between Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative and Pakistan’s Green Pakistan Programme. The two sides explored the potential for knowledge exchange, large-scale afforestation projects, and community-driven conservation efforts.
Dr. Musadik Malik underscored the vital role of youth in driving positive climate action, agreeing on the importance of empowering young leaders to champion sustainable development. He detailed recent initiatives by Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change, including facilitating five Pakistani green startups to participate in the SDG Fair in Seville, Spain, enabling them to connect with international investors and scale their businesses. The minister praised Ethiopia’s progress in implementing nationwide green policies, describing it as an inspiring model from which Pakistan seeks to learn.
Addressing domestic concerns, Dr. Malik drew attention to Pakistan’s growing food security challenges amid a rapidly accelerating population. He highlighted the urgent need for integrated solutions combining sustainable resource management, efficient water use, and environmentally responsible agricultural practices to build resilience against future shocks.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in environmental conservation, promoting climate-smart innovations, and working together to build a greener, more resilient future for the region and beyond.
