HEC Revamps Computer Science to Boost Digital Skills

The Higher Education Commission has unveiled an updated 2025 Computer Science curriculum aimed at equipping Pakistani students with the skills demanded by a rapidly evolving global tech market and the country’s digital transformation agenda. The curriculum introduces more than 14 specialised streams to strengthen technical depth and practical capabilities across universities.

The new framework incorporates advanced disciplines such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, robotics, quantum computing, cloud architecture and software engineering for emerging technologies, while emphasising hands-on learning, research-based projects and final-year capstone experiences. Developed in collaboration with academia, industry experts and government stakeholders, the Computer Science curriculum replaces the previous structure and will be implemented across public and private institutions nationwide, aligning with the Undergraduate Education Policy 2023.

A major shift is the formal recognition of the Associate Degree in Computing as a skills-based qualification, creating alternative professional pathways and enabling earlier entry into the workforce. The HEC has also integrated professional certification modules so students can earn industry-recognised credentials alongside their degrees, strengthening the link between academic outcomes and employer needs.

Education leaders say the reforms will bridge the gap between academia and industry, boost graduate employability and enhance Pakistan’s competitiveness in an AI-driven, knowledge-based economy. By focusing on practical training and certification within the Computer Science programme, the HEC expects universities to play a more active role in delivering the talent required for national digital initiatives and private sector growth.
