Launching District Football Championship 2026

The Pakistan Football Federation has announced the launch of the District Football Championship 2026, a nationwide initiative designed to revitalise grassroots football, discover emerging talent and strengthen domestic football structures across Pakistan. The federation said it will, for the first time, provide comprehensive professional and administrative support to all districts to ensure uniform standards and successful organisation of district-level competitions.

PFF Chief Operating Officer Muhammad Shahid Niaz Khokhar unveiled the plan at a press conference joined by PFF Director Media Umaid Wasim and provincial football heads participating virtually. Khokhar credited the provincial and regional football association presidents and PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani for driving the project and described the District Football Championship as a transformative step for rebuilding Pakistan’s football ecosystem from the grassroots up.

Under the new arrangement, District Football Associations will conduct the competitions while the PFF provides logistical, technical and administrative assistance. A collaborative framework has been established to ensure close coordination among districts, provinces and the federation, with formal consultations and regular meetings planned to finalise championship details through mutual consensus. A dedicated committee representing the four provinces and the three regions of Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will oversee implementation.

The federation expects the District Football Championship to deliver long-term benefits including stronger grassroots structures, fulfilment of constitutional requirements at DFA level, verification of genuine clubs, nationwide talent identification, capacity building for district bodies and improved use of modern competition management technology. The Pakistan Football Referee Association will supply qualified referees to maintain professional officiating standards throughout the tournaments.

Players identified through the district competitions will be offered structured training and development opportunities under qualified PFF coaches, creating a merit-based pathway from district football to club competition and national team representation. Following the district phase, the PFF plans to stage a National Club Championship as the next step in the player development pathway.

Khokhar emphasised President Mohsen Gilani’s commitment to grassroots events and said the federation will engage with FIFA and the AFC to seek all possible support, including financial assistance, to make these competitions successful. The initiative is positioned as a significant investment in Pakistan’s football future and a practical route for local players to access higher-level opportunities.

In a related move to strengthen youth development, the PFF also announced the National U17 Championship with strategic support for provinces and regions. Each of the four provinces will field two teams while Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will each enter one team. The PFF will cover all expenses for participating teams and the championship is scheduled for the first week of September 2026. Outstanding performers will be considered for national youth squads and selection for SAFF U17 and AFC U17 qualifying campaigns.

By combining district competitions, a national club stage and targeted youth championships, the PFF aims to create a sustainable talent pipeline that gives promising Pakistani footballers the training, exposure and pathways needed to succeed at higher levels of the game.
