Pakistan Ireland climate cooperation discussed by ministers

Ireland’s Ambassador Mary O’Neill met with Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musaddaq Malik to discuss expanding environmental cooperation and joint strategies to address climate change. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration on sustainable development and green projects, with a focus on renewable energy, youth-led innovation, and improving access to international environmental finance.

During the meeting, the officials reviewed opportunities for bilateral cooperation on green technologies and renewable energy. Ambassador O’Neill expressed Ireland’s interest in increasing collaboration on renewable energy and green innovation, while Dr. Malik underscored Pakistan’s commitment to pursuing sustainable development partnerships.

Dr. Musaddaq Malik warned that the global response to environmental challenges is shifting away from multilateral frameworks toward more bilateral and unilateral actions. He said the international community has so far fallen short of meeting environmental targets and noted that achieving self-reliance remains a major challenge for developing countries.

To address financing gaps, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination plans to strengthen institutional capacity to secure and manage international environmental funds more effectively. This effort aims to improve access to global funding mechanisms that support climate mitigation and adaptation projects.

A priority emerging from the talks was support for youth-led green entrepreneurship. The ministry outlined plans for special measures to assist young founders of green startups, and to empower youth to develop eco-friendly innovations that contribute to sustainable development goals.

Both Pakistan and Ireland agreed to deepen cooperation on sustainable development initiatives and green projects, exploring concrete areas of partnership in renewable energy, technology transfer, and capacity building to advance shared environmental objectives.
