The Government of Pakistan, in collaboration with UN Women, has officially completed the renovation of the Family Protection and Rehabilitation Center for Women in Islamabad, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV). The upgraded facility now offers comprehensive, confidential services designed to support survivors and promote their dignity and safety.
During the inauguration ceremony attended by government officials, development partners, diplomatic representatives, UN agencies, and civil society organizations, officials emphasized the importance of the center as a sanctuary for women facing violence. Abdul Khalique Sheikh, Secretary of the Ministry of Human Rights, highlighted that the center is more than just a building—it is a symbol of protection, hope, and dignity for survivors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a holistic approach in addressing GBV through legal reforms, psychosocial support, healthcare, and social protection, with strong collaboration from partners such as UN Women.
UN Women Country Representative Jamshed Qazi also underscored the significance of the renovated facility as part of a broader support network for GBV survivors. He emphasized that infrastructure upgrades must be paired with legal reforms and community engagement to achieve systemic change. The renewed center now provides a range of vital services, including private counseling rooms, medical care, psychosocial support, legal aid, and secure referral systems—all within a single, accessible location. This comprehensive approach aims to empower survivors and facilitate their recovery at every stage.
Globally, GBV remains a pressing human rights issue, with UN Women citing that one in three women experience some form of violence during their lifetime. In Pakistan, over 63,000 cases were reported between 2020 and 2023, predominantly involving domestic violence. However, these figures are believed to underestimate the true extent due to societal stigma, fear, and lack of access to support services, leaving many survivors unsupported.
Centers like the Family Protection and Rehabilitation Center play a critical role in Pakistan’s response to GBV. They provide survivors with timely, dignified assistance, helping them rebuild their lives in safety and confidence. The completion of this renovated facility signifies the government’s ongoing dedication to protecting women’s rights and fostering an environment where survivors can seek help and find hope for a safer future.
