Naguman LED Bulb Initiative Empowers Afghan Refugees

**LED Bulb Production Unit Launched in Peshawar’s Naguman Refugee Village to Empower Afghan Refugees**
In a significant step towards promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods among Afghan refugees, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in collaboration with the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees KP and the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP), has inaugurated an LED bulb production unit in Naguman Refugee Village, Peshawar. Six Afghan refugees—both men and women—are spearheading the business initiative aimed at creating income-generating opportunities within the community.
The LED bulb production unit was officially inaugurated by UNHCR’s Deputy Representative, Ms. Fumiko Kashiwa, alongside Mr. Shakeel Khan Safi of the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees KP. The project reflects UNHCR’s broader mission to empower Afghan refugee women in particular, enhancing their ability to contribute to household incomes and promoting self-sufficiency.
During her visit to Peshawar, Ms. Kashiwa also engaged with urban female outreach volunteers, highlighting UNHCR’s ongoing commitment to expanding access not only to livelihood opportunities but also to essential services such as health and education. These efforts are part of the agency’s longstanding dedication to strengthening protection measures and addressing the specific needs of refugee women and girls.
The partnership with SRSP and local authorities is seen as an integral aspect of fostering resilience within the refugee community, offering practical skills and business opportunities that can have a transformative impact on lives. By supporting such innovative initiatives, UNHCR aims to light the path to opportunity and hope for Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan.
