Bilawal, Zardari Lauded as Heirs to Benazir’s Political and Diplomatic Legacy

ISLAMABAD: Prominent political leaders, party officials, and supporters gathered at the National Press Club to commemorate the 72nd birthday of Benazir Bhutto, celebrating her enduring legacy and the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) foundational role in shaping Pakistan’s military strength, diplomacy, and democratic resilience.

The event, organized by Sadiya Hayat Khan, who also formally joined the PPP on the occasion, featured a cake-cutting ceremony and a documentary showcasing Benazir Bhutto’s political contributions. It was attended by senior party figures, including Governor Punjab Sardar Salim Haidar Khan, PM’s Advisor Qamar Zaman Kaira, PPP Central Punjab Secretary General Syed Hassan Murtaza, and Women’s Wing Secretary General Nargis Faiz Malik.

In his keynote speech, Governor Salim Haidar Khan praised Benazir Bhutto’s visionary leadership, crediting her for laying the groundwork for Pakistan’s military achievements, including advancements in missile technology and nuclear deterrence. He asserted that the foundation of Pakistan’s current defense capabilities, including internationally recognized missile systems, is rooted in the efforts of PPP leadership—particularly those of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, who advanced defense ambitions despite economic hurdles.

He also commended Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s diplomatic leadership, citing his strong international advocacy for Pakistan’s positions, especially on India. Bilawal’s bold statement branding Indian PM Narendra Modi as the “butcher of Gujarat” was highlighted as an example of assertive foreign policy shaped by PPP’s legacy.

Qamar Zaman Kaira emphasized that PPP leaders do not fade after office but leave lasting imprints on national history. He recalled the personal and political sacrifices of Zulfikar and Benazir Bhutto, applauding their roles in defending Pakistan’s democracy, constitutional values, and sovereignty. Kaira lauded the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, noting their commitment to unity and democratic continuity.

Syed Hassan Murtaza reiterated the party’s unwavering dedication to democratic struggle, recalling PPP’s leadership during turbulent periods. He spotlighted Benazir Bhutto’s pioneering role in advancing women’s rights, calling her a symbol of resilience and integrity.

Nargis Faiz Malik stressed the PPP’s role in national integration, highlighting the party’s consistent stance on provincial harmony and inclusion. She reaffirmed the Women’s Wing’s resolve to further Benazir Bhutto’s mission of empowering women and marginalized communities.

Speakers throughout the event praised PPP’s legacy of principled politics, sacrifices, and resistance against authoritarianism. The screening of a documentary chronicling Benazir Bhutto’s career served as a powerful reminder of her historic contributions to Pakistani politics.

In conclusion, the celebration not only honored Benazir Bhutto’s enduring legacy but also served as a reaffirmation of the PPP’s commitment to democracy, national security, and inclusive progress. Leaders expressed their confidence that her vision continues to inspire the party and the nation’s path forward.
