Promoting Mental Health Through the National Youth Helpline

A seminar highlighting the importance of mental health among youth and promoting awareness about relevant support services was held at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU), Sheringal, Dir Upper. Organized jointly by the Higher Education Commission’s Research & Analysis Activities (R&AA), Aiming Change for Tomorrow (ACT) International, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the event focused particularly on the recently launched National Youth Helpline (0800-69457) and included active participation from over 250 students.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Asif Hussain, Director of Research & Analysis Activities at HEC, emphasized the critical link between mental well-being and the effectiveness of the youth in society. He pointed out that mental health awareness and emotional support are vital in enabling the younger population to assume constructive roles and responsibilities.
The seminar also featured a session conducted by Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Pakistan, aimed at drug abuse prevention and creating awareness among students about substance misuse and its adverse effects. Following the session, an awareness walk was organized, reflecting strong student participation and their collective commitment to combating substance abuse.
Highlighting institutional support, Vice Chancellor of SBBU, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahab, praised the initiative of the National Youth Helpline, calling it a timely and significant step towards empowering youth through better emotional and mental health. He underscored that mental health is foundational for personal and social transformation. Similarly, the Pro-Vice Chancellor appreciated the partnership and collaboration of HEC, ACT International, and UNFPA in delivering such socially significant initiatives.
