Bioethanol Production Workshop Offers Practical Skills at NUST

**NUST Hosts Workshop on Bioethanol Production, Highlighting Role of Bioenergy in Sustainable Development**

The Department of Energy Systems Engineering at USPCAS-E, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), organized an interactive workshop on bioethanol production, offering participants practical insights into renewable energy solutions and the broader importance of bioenergy technologies in supporting sustainable development.

The “Fueling the Future: A Hands-on Workshop on Bioethanol Production” took place at the Biofuel Lab of USPCAS-E and brought together students, researchers, and advocates for sustainability. The event commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Adeel Waqas, Principal of USPCAS-E, followed by Dr. Rabia Liaquat, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Energy Systems Engineering. Dr. Liaquat emphasized the crucial role of bioenergy technologies in supporting global energy transitions and helping achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG-7 (affordable and clean energy) and SDG-13 (climate action).

A comprehensive lecture provided attendees with scientific insights into the process of bioethanol production, covering the fundamentals of biofuels and their role in reducing carbon emissions. Hands-on sessions, led by lab engineer Ms. Tehreem Assad Khan and PhD scholar Ms. Misha Nadeem, allowed participants to engage directly with the experimental procedures involved in bioethanol production. Key demonstrations included the fermentation of biological feedstocks and the distillation of ethanol, as well as the use of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for analyzing alcohol concentration.

Throughout the workshop, participants were given the opportunity to explore the practical applications of bioethanol in transportation, energy generation, and industrial sectors, and to discuss bioethanol’s potential to support national bioenergy policies and promote a circular economy.

The workshop offered a valuable platform for gaining knowledge and practical skills essential for advancing renewable energy initiatives. Organizers extended special thanks to Ms. Manal Arshad for her contributions, as well as to volunteers Ms. Zahra Saeed and Mr. M. Ans Ibrahim Khan for their invaluable coordination and support.
