PHEC Meeting Advances Research and Development Centers

The Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), under the leadership of Chairperson Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, held a high-level meeting with representatives from both public and private higher education institutions to advance plans for establishing Research and Development (R&D) Centers and Clusters across key academic sectors. The gathering focused on evaluating university proposals for thematic research areas, with particular emphasis on minerals and renewable energy.
Universities presented their current research capabilities and infrastructure, demonstrating strong preparedness for developing Centers of Excellence in fields such as solar, hydrogen, and biomass energy technologies. Representatives highlighted the potential for contributing to advances in renewable energy, as well as the importance of research into minerals and rare metals in areas such as geology and mining.
The meeting addressed a broad spectrum of research themes, including artificial intelligence and data science, climate change, water security, food and nutrition, One Health/public health, migration and labor affairs, public policy, economic development, and education reforms. These areas reflect both national priorities and global challenges requiring collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches.
Higher education reforms featured prominently in the discussions, with particular attention to teaching excellence frameworks, digital transformation in academia, public policy research, and efforts to strengthen connections between academic research and policymaking.
Participants concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to fostering innovation, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and supporting impactful research that can address pressing challenges in Pakistan and beyond.
