Strengthening Epidemiology Training in Pakistan with WHO

Dr. Imran Younus, Associate Professor of Public Health and Epidemiologist, recently met with Dr. Dapeng Luo, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Pakistan, to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s epidemiological workforce.

During their meeting, both experts focused on creating national teams equipped with advanced skills, emphasizing the importance of effectiveness, sustainability, and self-reliance in Pakistan’s public health sector. They identified the Health Services Academy (HSA) in Islamabad as a key partner in developing these teams.

The two epidemiologists agreed on the need to develop and deliver specialized training modules for epidemiologists. These courses will be offered through distance learning platforms, ensuring that healthcare professionals across the country have access to future-oriented skills. The collaboration aims to prepare medical workers for emerging challenges and address the shortage of professionals in epidemiology, data science, and digital surveillance.

The meeting highlighted the commitment of both WHO Pakistan and local academic institutions to advance public health capacity and modernize the nation’s approach to disease surveillance and management.
