Pakistan’s Parliament Prepares for Major Speakers Conference

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq held a key meeting in Islamabad, focusing on strengthening institutional cooperation between Pakistan’s legislative houses and enhancing parliamentary coordination on major national and international issues. The leaders also discussed preparations for a significant upcoming international conference and addressed the impact of ongoing floods in the country.
During the meeting, Chairman Senate Gilani briefed Speaker Sadiq on the forthcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference. The event is set to gather representatives from over 45 countries, marking one of the most prominent multilateral parliamentary assemblies ever hosted by Pakistan. The agenda will cover crucial global challenges such as regional peace, sustainable development, climate change, and the formation of collective strategies to address emerging threats.
Speaker Sadiq assured the National Assembly’s strong support for the successful organization of the conference, emphasizing its importance as an opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its commitment to global dialogue and peacebuilding efforts.
On a personal note, Speaker Sadiq expressed his condolences to Chairman Gilani on the passing of his cousin, Syed Tanveer ul Hassan Gilani. He honored the late Gilani’s religious, spiritual, and social contributions, describing him as a respected and community-oriented figure.
The meeting also included a review of the country’s prevailing political and economic conditions. A major part of the discussion focused on the damage caused by recent heavy rains and flooding, with particular concern over the release of floodwaters from India into Punjab’s rivers, which has intensified both human and material losses in affected areas.
Both parliamentary leaders urged the public to take precautionary measures amid the ongoing natural disaster and to fully cooperate with government and relevant authorities. They stressed the importance of national unity and collective action to limit casualties and to mitigate financial damages resulting from the floods.
