DARPA Achieves Wireless Power Beaming with Laser Technology

In a groundbreaking advancement, the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has successfully demonstrated wireless electricity transmission via laser beams. This milestone experiment involved transmitting 800 watts of power across a distance of 8.6 kilometers for a duration of 30 seconds, marking one of the most powerful and extended-distance attempts in real-world conditions.

The breakthrough showcases a major step forward in “Power Beaming” technology, an innovative method set to transform energy delivery systems. Utilizing lasers, electricity is first converted into concentrated beams of light, transmitted wirelessly through the atmosphere, and finally reconverted into electrical energy using specialized photovoltaic receivers.

Experts highlight the vast potential of this technology to revolutionize energy distribution systems, especially in remote regions and hard-to-reach locations, such as disaster zones or off-grid areas.
