Expanding Fistula Training Across South Asia
UNFPA Pakistan, together with Koohi Goth Hospital and partner organisations, has launched the first-ever International Surgeons Training on Fistula Repair in the Asia-Pacific region. This South-South initiative brings targeted fistula training to surgeons from Afghanistan, Nepal and Bangladesh to improve surgical capacity and patient outcomes.
The programme focuses on practical skills and mentorship so participating surgeons can perform complex repairs and offer follow-up care that helps women rebuild their lives. By strengthening regional expertise, the training aims to reduce the backlog of untreated obstetric fistula cases and expand access to quality care within neighbouring health systems.
This collaboration highlights the role of coordinated regional efforts in confronting a persistent maternal health challenge. With hands-on instruction and peer exchange, the initiative equips surgeons with techniques and confidence to deliver sustained, life-changing treatment for women living with obstetric fistula.
