Advancing Minority Rights Across Pakistan

Archbishop Germano Penemote, the Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan, met Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar in Islamabad on 3 November, with Minister of State for Law & Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik also present. The meeting centered on concrete steps to protect and promote minority rights and inclusion across the country.

Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar praised the Christian community’s longstanding contributions to Pakistan, highlighting their role in education, health and social welfare. He noted that missionary schools, colleges and hospitals have helped educate generations and that recognising these efforts is integral to reinforcing minority rights and national cohesion.

Discussions covered a range of government initiatives including enhanced security for vulnerable communities, restoration and protection of places of worship, and strengthened mechanisms to promote equality and safeguard minority rights. The participants also reviewed plans for educational scholarships and financial support aimed at underprivileged minority families to improve access and opportunities.

Archbishop Germano Penemote expressed appreciation for the government’s initiatives and acknowledged their positive effects on minority communities. He reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to promoting peace, social harmony and interfaith dialogue as part of broader efforts to support minority rights in Pakistan.

Senator Tarar reiterated Pakistan’s constitutional and international human rights obligations and underlined the Ministry’s resolve to build an inclusive society where every citizen, regardless of faith, enjoys equal rights, security and meaningful participation in national life.
