Driving Press Freedom Pakistan Forward
Shazia Mehboob took part in a vigorous PPF Board of Advisory meeting where heated discussions centred on the current media landscape in Pakistan and the increasing state control affecting editorial independence. Participants examined how evolving regulatory pressures and operational constraints are reshaping newsroom practices and public information flows, raising urgent concerns about press freedom Pakistan.
The gathering brought together senior mentors and experienced journalists who outlined the growing challenges to journalists and journalism, from legal hurdles to safety risks and restricted access to information. Members shared firsthand perspectives on how these pressures are impacting reporting standards and the capacity of news organisations to hold power to account, emphasising the need to protect journalists on the ground.
Deliberations focused on practical strategies and collaborative responses that the advisory board can promote to strengthen safeguards for reporters and preserve independent journalism. Conversations included proposals for sustained dialogue with stakeholders, reinforced professional support networks, and measures to improve legal and operational resilience, all aimed at defending press freedom Pakistan in a changing environment.
Honoured to serve alongside many of her mentors, Shazia Mehboob reiterated her commitment to contributing to these vital conversations and to helping the board map a feasible way forward that supports media plurality and the safety of journalists across the country.
