Saima Wazed, Regional Director of WHO’s South-East Asia Region and head of the organization’s Global Leprosy Programme, met with Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, to discuss challenges and strategies aimed at accelerating efforts to eliminate leprosy.
During the meeting, Wazed and Sasakawa exchanged views and insights on the current barriers faced in leprosy eradication and stressed the urgency of addressing these issues effectively. They agreed on the necessity of increased collaboration, comprehensive awareness campaigns, and targeted support for affected communities worldwide.
Both leaders highlighted the progress achieved so far but emphasized that sustained commitment and additional resources would be essential for completely eliminating leprosy as a public health issue. They underscored the need to boost detection efforts, ensure early treatment access, reduce stigma surrounding the disease, and enhance community education to achieve their goals efficiently.
