Altaf Hussain Starts Drive to Modernize NGC

Altaf Hussain has assumed charge as Managing Director of the National Grid Company of Pakistan Limited (NGC) in Lahore on November 19, 2025, marking the start of a focused effort to modernize the national transmission network.

Mr. Hussain brings more than three decades of experience in power transmission and distribution, beginning with his service at the Water and Power Development Authority in 1987. After more than ten years at WAPDA he moved to Canada and spent 27 years in the international power sector, most recently serving as Director of Asset Strategy and Planning at BC Hydro where he led initiatives in grid resilience, electrification and the energy transition.

His return to Pakistan reflects a long-standing commitment to apply international best practices at home. His appointment comes as NGC completes its transition from the former National Transmission and Despatch Company under the government restructuring that created the Independent System and Market Operator and the Energy Infrastructure Development and Management Company to improve transparency and sector performance.

On his first day Mr. Hussain addressed senior executives and managers in an online session, outlining a clear vision to transform NGC into a modern, progressive utility. He emphasised team building, the adoption of new technology, and strong communication across all levels, while stressing mentoring and coaching to nurture in‑house talent and leadership.

As Managing Director, Altaf Hussain will lead efforts on transmission network development, operations and reliability enhancement, coordinating closely with ISMO on system and market operations and with EIDMC on infrastructure projects. His international experience and understanding of Pakistan’s power sector position him to guide the company through its transformation and help deliver on timelines critical to the country’s power needs and economic growth.
