Over-40s T20 World Cup Kicks Off as Pakistan Prevails

The IMC Over-40s T20 World Cup began in Karachi with a busy opening day that produced six decisive results and competitive cricket across city venues. The marquee fixture at the National Stadium saw Pakistan hold on for a narrow three-run victory over South Africa in a match that came down to the final overs.

Batting first, Pakistan posted 134 for 5 in their 20 overs with a steady 45 from Tariq Mahmood and a useful 36 from captain Abdul Razzaq. Also at Southend, the United Arab Emirates posted 166 for 8 and restricted Hong Kong to 135 for 7 to claim a 31-run victory, showcasing disciplined death bowling and fielding.

Karachi Gymkhana hosted two matches that underlined the depth of veteran talent on show. West Indies completed a comfortable chase of Canada’s 122 for 6 with seven wickets in hand, while the Rest of the World side defended 134 for 9 to bowl out Zimbabwe for 80 for 8 in a match dominated by tight lines and consistent pressure.

At the National Bank Stadium Sri Lanka chased down Australia’s 147 for 7 with one over to spare, winning by three wickets. Marlon Fernando and Manjula Guruge each made important contributions of 35, helping Sri Lanka navigate a challenging chase under lights.

The opening day offered a strong demonstration of veteran competitiveness and skill, with the Over-40s T20 format delivering close finishes and spirited performances that set an energetic tone for the remainder of the tournament in Karachi.
