Shaping South Asia Maritime Security Agenda

The National Institute of Maritime Affairs launched a major new volume in Islamabad on December 1, 2025, bringing together analyses from leading international and national scholars on the evolving security landscape of the Indian Ocean region. The publication offers a wide-ranging examination of threats and opportunities that shape Maritime Security across South Asia and presents actionable insights for Pakistani policymakers.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed attended the ceremony as Chief Guest and underlined Pakistan’s maritime potential and the need for sustained ocean-conscious strategic thinking. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, delivered the keynote address and framed the study’s strategic relevance for regional stability and economic prosperity.

Vice Admiral Dr. Ahmed Saeed (Retd), outgoing President of NIMA, described the publication’s genesis and reiterated the institute’s commitment to deepening national maritime consciousness. Incoming President Rear Admiral Javaid Iqbal thanked contributing authors and reviewers for their work, while Admiral Aziz Mirza, former Chief of the Naval Staff, attended as Guest of Honour. The event drew members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, academia, think tanks, strategic analysts, and maritime professionals.

The volume addresses both traditional and non-traditional security challenges, examines technological advancements affecting naval and commercial domains, highlights climate imperatives for coastal states, and evaluates governance frameworks needed to manage shared maritime spaces. By focusing on practical policy options, the study strengthens the conversation on Maritime Security and offers lessons that are directly applicable to Pakistan’s strategic planning.

Placing Pakistan’s maritime discourse at the center of regional strategic literature, the publication aims to guide practitioners and decision makers as they navigate the complex Indo-Pacific environment and implement policies that enhance maritime resilience, economic opportunity, and regional cooperation.
