Rising Panel Breaks Hold in PPA Elections

The latest PPA elections have produced a major realignment within the Pakistan Pharmacists Association, ending long-standing dominance and producing a split mandate at the centre while delivering a regional landslide for the Rising Pharmacists Panel.

Official results notified by Chief Election Convener Dr. Najam-ul-Hassan Jawa confirmed Muhammad Alamgir Rao as President PPA Centre representing the Professional Pharmacists Group. The central executive has a competitive composition with PPG securing 14 of 24 seats and the Rising Pharmacists Panel capturing 10 central seats, marking the first time the panel has achieved double-digit representation at the centre in the Association’s 38-year electoral history.

Key central office bearers include Imran Ahmad Mumtaz as Vice President Punjab, Shahzad Hussain as Vice President Sindh, Dr. Abdul Aleem Awan as Vice President Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Asmat Ullah Agha as Vice President Balochistan, and Muhammad Shifa Khan Bangash as Vice President Islamabad. Prof. Dr. Furqan K. Hashmi has been elected General Secretary and Faraz Ashraf will serve as Joint Secretary of PPA Centre.

The most decisive result came in the Islamabad, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan branch where the Rising Pharmacists Panel led by Sardar Shabbir Ahmad achieved a complete clean sweep, winning all 24 contested seats. Khaqan Babar was elected President of the Islamabad-AJK-GB branch, consolidating the panel’s regional mandate and signalling strong grassroots support against traditional blocs.

At the executive committee level, Ahmad Jawad Qureshi was chosen as Finance Secretary and Prof. Dr. Mirza Tasawer Baig as Press Secretary. Elected executive members include representatives from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad, while female representatives named to the committee are Misbah Noureen (Punjab), Dr. Afshan Siddiq (Sindh), Nabeela Niaz (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Asma Manzoor (Balochistan) and Zahida Ishraq (Islamabad).

Under the Association’s constitution, Sardar Shabbir Ahmad will serve as Senior Vice President as Immediate Past President, while Mr. Alamgir Rao will remain a member of the Executive Committee as Immediate Past General Secretary, providing continuity alongside the newly elected leadership.

Representing pharmacists across Pakistan and an industry valued at approximately $3.2 billion, the Association’s new leadership has pledged to safeguard professional rights, enhance regulatory influence and prioritise patient safety and ethical medicine governance. Observers within the profession described the PPA elections outcome as a defining moment that reflects growing demand for reform, broader representation and a shift toward younger, reform-oriented leadership.
