Ensuring NRE Exam Transparency and Safety
The National University of Medical Sciences in Rawalpindi has continued its role managing the NRE exam to maintain credibility, integrity and transparency in the licensing process. NUMS is responsible for paper setting, examination conduct, evaluation, compilation and declaration of final results to uphold patient safety and public trust.
The NRE exam is administered in two steps at least twice a year in accordance with approved standards, structure and syllabus, all of which are available on the PM&DC website. The assessment is based on a curriculum equivalent to Pakistan’s MBBS and BDS programmes, ensuring alignment with national training outcomes.
NUMS conducts all operational elements of the examination independently, while the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council performs its role as the national regulatory authority. Candidates are invited to submit any complaints or concerns through the designated online portal designed to track and address issues promptly.
Result policies for the NRE exam are clearly defined and results are published in a timely manner. The most recent Step I results have been posted on the PM&DC website, with detailed marks accessible through PM&DC’s official portal so candidates can review their performance.
The passing threshold for the NRE exam is set at 60 percent and there is no negative marking. PM&DC also provides an option to apply for re-totaling of results; for the December 2025 sitting only two candidates filed re-totaling requests, which were processed under established procedures.
PM&DC has reiterated that the entire examination process is conducted without discrimination and in a transparent manner, rejecting claims of opacity as unfounded. The council stressed that the National Registration Examination for Foreign Medical Graduates is a statutory requirement under an Act of Parliament aimed at standardisation, transparency and quality assurance in medical and dental education and professional practice in Pakistan.
