Residents Demand Action Over Rawalpindi Water Crisis

Residents of Union Council 31 in Mohalla Mahmood Ali Shah staged a vigorous protest against the Water and Sanitation Agency, chanting slogans and demanding immediate restoration of water and the suspension of the WASA Managing Director.

Locals say Rawalpindi water supply has been completely suspended for a week after a tube well motor burned out. Protesters allege that motors installed by WASA are substandard and break down frequently, triggering repeated disruptions and serious daily hardship for families in the neighbourhood.

Residents pointed out that bills are collected regularly while supply remains unreliable. They claimed similar breakdowns are being reported across the city and blamed poor planning and inferior equipment for the recurring outages.

Zaheer Ahmed Awan, chairman of the Citizen Action Committee, said citizens were bearing the brunt of WASA’s inefficiency while elected representatives stayed silent. He warned that incidents of burning tube well motors have become routine in dozens of union councils, which the committee attributes to low-quality machinery.

Awan announced a protest movement targeting the WASA Managing Director and concerned officials, with demonstrations planned daily across different union councils. He said the campaign will continue until responsible officials are suspended and corrective measures are implemented to restore reliable Rawalpindi water service.

Residents have urged the Chief Minister of Punjab to take immediate notice, ensure prompt restoration of supply and hold those responsible to account. They warned that the scope of protests will be expanded if the situation is not resolved swiftly.
