Pakistan U16 Take Historic UEFA Step
Pakistan U16 made a landmark appearance at the UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, as the young side took the field at the BIIK Sports Complex for their first match in the competition.
Kazakhstan asserted control early on, with Platon Shipstin converting a penalty in the seventh minute and Anuar Tolendi adding a counterattacking goal in the 21st minute. Kazakhstan captain David Zarechnyy capitalised on a defensive lapse to make it 3-0 in the 30th minute, and Daniyar Kassi headed a fourth during first-half stoppage time to leave Pakistan facing a steep deficit at the interval.
The Pakistan U16 response after the break was more spirited. The team regrouped and created several openings, and captain Abdul Samad reduced the arrears with a powerful header from a precise Muhammad Hanzala cross. Substitute Danish Masih came close on two occasions as Pakistan kept pressing and highlighted areas of promise despite the eventual 1-4 scoreline.
Head coach Mohammed Essa underlined the value of the experience, saying ‘This is a learning experience for the team, as it is the first time a Pakistan side is participating in a UEFA competition.’ Essa praised the players for their second-half reaction and stressed that exposure at this level will accelerate development for the squad.
Abdul Samad reflected on the match with guarded optimism: ‘It wasn’t the result we wanted, but we will take the lessons from this match and come back stronger in the next game.’ Pakistan U16 now prepare to face Russia on Monday April 27, 2026, carrying the lessons from Shymkent into their next challenge.
