Championing Workers Rights on International Labour Day
On International Labour Day, Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani described May 1 as a powerful emblem of hard work, human dignity and collective struggle, reminding the nation of the sacrifices made by labourers in their fight for basic rights. He recalled the Haymarket movement in Chicago and its role in shaping the global labour rights movement, noting that the legacy of that struggle gives meaning to the annual observance.
Mr Gilani said the efforts of the working class form the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and that national development, economic stability and sustainable prosperity cannot be achieved without securing workers’ welfare. He stressed that the values of dignity at work and social justice are rooted both in the Constitution of Pakistan and in the teachings of Islam, which call for respect and fair treatment of labour.
The Acting President emphasised the state’s duty to provide dignified employment, fair wages, social protection and safe working environments so workers can lead honourable lives. He highlighted Parliament’s ongoing role in enacting labour-friendly laws and said legislative steps will continue to address wage security, workplace safety and expanded social security.
Reiterating a commitment to reform, Mr Gilani pledged further legislative measures and institutional improvements to strengthen social protection systems and deliver sustainable solutions to challenges faced by workers. He underlined that meaningful change will require both stronger laws and effective implementation across federal and provincial institutions.
Paying tribute to overseas Pakistani workers, the Acting President acknowledged their crucial contribution through remittances and assured that protecting their rights remains a government priority. He noted that safeguarding the welfare of expatriate workers is integral to the broader agenda of workers’ welfare at home.
As global economic pressures persist, Mr Gilani said International Labour Day is more important than ever, offering a moment to recognise services, appreciate struggles and renew solidarity with workers. He affirmed that the Pakistan Peoples Party and Parliament will continue efforts to uphold labour rights, promote social justice and work towards a fairer society for all workers.
