Deepening FAO Collaboration for Climate Resilience

On 24 November 2025 in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik met with a Food and Agriculture Organisation delegation led by Mr Lifeng Li, Director of the Land and Water Division, to accelerate FAO collaboration on Pakistan’s land and water challenges.

Mr Lifeng Li flagged the critical role of food systems and resource management for a climate-vulnerable Pakistan and outlined FAO’s Country Programming Framework (2023–2027). He highlighted ongoing initiatives to prevent land degradation, optimise use of Indus Basin resources and strengthen water governance, and introduced the Aqua Portal as a tool for inter-agency data and information sharing.

Dr Musadik Malik welcomed FAO support and urged a focus on areas with low public returns by boosting capacity building and institutional strengthening. He discussed plans to establish Green Clusters to link young Pakistani entrepreneurs working on green startups with international investors, stressing that such partnerships are central to effective FAO collaboration and sustainable, market-driven climate action.

The Minister called for a structured collaborative framework that ensures administrative coordination, targeted capacity development and expanded public–private partnerships. He warned against repurposing loans intended for education, health and human development for climate projects, noting such practices undermine progress on the Sustainable Development Goals and long-term resilience.

Both sides agreed on the need for strong strategic alignment between federal, provincial and international partners, with active involvement from the Ministry to ensure coherence, measurable outcomes and lasting impact for Pakistan’s climate-resilient development.
